ASIC has noticed many of the trading names on the ABN lookup do not meet the requirements of a registered business name.
If you plan to carry out a business in a name other than your own personal name, then you need to register for a business name with ASIC.
When a business name is registered with ASIC it is displayed on the ABN lookup against the associated ABN record. You must have an ABN number before applying for a business name.
You also need to ensure that you are not trading under a name that has already been taken. Registering a business name will ensure you are meeting the requirements. It also prevents anyone else from using the same name as your business name for trading.
