Trading names no longer valid from October 2023

Before 28 May 2012, the Australian Business Register (ABR) collected names used by entities to carry out their business activities.

The ABR displays this name as a trading name. A ‘trading name’ refers to an unregistered name that businesses could use before the introduction of the National Business Names Register.

Your trading name can be found on the ABN lookup. If you would like to remove the trading name appearing against your Australian Business Number (ABN), you will need to contact the ABR.

From 31 October 2023, if you would like to continue business under your trading name you will need to register a business name. From this date, ABR registrar will no longer public display trading names.

From 31 October 2023, the only names displayed on ABN Lookup will be:

  • an entity's legal name

  • an entity's business name registered with ASIC.

If you continue to use a trading name for business purposes, rather than your legal name, or a business name registered with ASIC, the entities you deal with will be unable to use ABN Lookup to verify your identity or GST registration status. For information about registering a business name, please see ASIC's website or feel welcome to get in contact with us. The fees for registering a business name are:

  • $39 for one year

  • $92 for three years

Once your registration period is over, you'll need to renew your business name if you still want to trade. The fees for renewal are the same as registration.
